You don't 5 gazillion links to be number one in your industry, but I'll bet that you don't know how many links you do need to be the most linked to website in your industry in your market. Why would you want to know this and is it hard to figure out?

Well, you'd want to know so that you you can budget the time and resources to make sure that you are the dominant internet force for your particular business on the Internet for your clients. And, thankfully, it is pretty easy to figure it out. Here's how.

Google allows you to search for:

link:anydomainname.com

And have the number of websites that link to that site come up. It's an interesting tool for determining who you need to beat and what you need to accomplish to beat them. What do I mean? Let's look at an example.

Let's say you sell widgets in Anytown, USA. Go do a search for the term "widget anytown" and see who your competition is. Then go ahead and take the number one result's website address and do a "link" search like I show above for that domain name.

Google, if it is behaving correctly, should show you the sites that link to that website. Count them (Google usually tells you the number) and that's your new goal.

Of course, check the top 10 or so sites like this to see if anyone beats the number one results and adjust your goal as needed. I think you'll find, in most industries, your goal is lower than you originally thought.
