The Shoe Tree

By Ian Kleine

The Shoe Tree is one of the more weird oddities in the area of Middlegate, Nevada. The branches are full with hundreds of shoes (don't know if there's a decent pair in the pile) but one would be compelled to investigate this matter.

Take note. There isn't just one shoe tree. There are lots and lots of them.

For instance, there is one near Middle Gate Nevada (somewhere around Highway 50). A story that goes around is that their was this wife who threw her shoes away when she got in an argument with her husband. She had thrown her shoes over the tree and walked off with nigh a shoe to cover her feet. The guy drove off, thought over it and took her back, effectively reconciling with her. Now, they had thrown their baby's first shoes over the tree too. It was a living romance story.

Nowadays, a lot of shoe trees have sprouted and had spread everywhere. Some are used for art and expression. Some for charity (it is said that the throwers had left their shoes on top of the trees for the lesser fortunate to pick and wear, often replacing them with their more-worn and more-used sneakers, for whatever would be left of them).

A lot of the trees had suffered damage due to tree collapsing, being struck by lightning, waterlogged sneakers causing limbs and branches to break, winter frosts breaking the shoes, residents cutting off the branches so to protect their homes; the trees however, are not close to total death.

Just like with the passing of time, with the death of old shoe trees, more and more younger shoe trees are growing and replacing those that have been lost. Shoe trees not only represent freedom, they also represent a part of history for the people of Nevada, and of the other states as well, where these trees exist.
